RYA Training Courses - Progression Ladder

The journey from novice to Ocean Yachtmaster is a serious undertaking, requiring dedication and many hours of effort. It involves a mixture of theory training and many hours of practical training experience. Ocean Yachtmaster is recognised around the world as the ultimate sailing qualification.
Of course, not everyone wants or needs all the skills of a Yachtmaster, so the RYA have divided the learning into a number of distinct stages and qualifications. Students progress up the ladder until they reach their desired skill and qualification level.

RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster	Theory	5	Practical. Navigation to Day Skipper. IRPCS Knowledge	Theoretical knowledge of offshore navigation, pilotage and meteorology
RYA Coastal Skipper	Practical	5	15 days sailing (2 as skipper) 300 nautical miles and 8 night hours, plus Day Skipper Practical and Theory.	Can begin to skipper a yacht on coastal passages by day and night
RYA Yachtmaster Preparation	Practical	as req'd +1 for exam	50 days at sea, 2500 miles, 5 passages over 60 miles with 2 as skipper, 2 overnight.	Prepared for Yachtmaster exam
